Our employees are our most critical assets. That’s why we take great care to select not only the best expertise, but also the right mindsets. Professionals who enjoy the diversity of our customers’ needs and embrace creative problem-solving. Meet one of them: Esey Gebreyesus, B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering.
I develop sensor hardware and software solutions to meet the precise needs of our customers. This includes analog and digital sensor systems, as well as all sorts of PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards). I also develop algorithms and signal processing for our smart sensor technologies.
What does this mean in practice? As soon as a new customer request comes in, I would typically discuss the specifics with that client. Based on the input, the development process starts. After thorough internal discussion and alignment, we will recommend a solution to the customer that meets their needs and fits their budget.
To solve any problem, I first need to understand it, and what the customer is trying to achieve. That’s why, at ASC, we typically spend time with the customer’s engineers upfront: to listen and properly understand their needs. Next, I create a shortlist of all feasible solutions, to then discuss with the ASC team. In this open exchange of diverse views and expertise, we narrow down the list to eventually focus on the most promising solution. For complex problems, there can also be practical testing involved in the process. However, when I go back to the customer to present the recommended solution, I always make sure to share the full technical rationale behind it. And, usually, I also have a feasible ‘plan B’ with me, in case the customer wishes to discuss alternatives, too.
Since graduating in electrical engineering from Mannheim University of Applied Sciences in 2019, I attended around 150 online courses and read countless professional articles, abstracts and books. I believe that true learning begins post-graduation, which drives me to regularly engage in courses and stay up to date with the latest technical literature. This not only keeps me informed and our customers benefitting from the latest status of science and technology, but it also fuels my passion for my profession.
In my electrical engineering studies with a focus on embedded systems, I wrote my final thesis about sensor technologies, guided by a professor with deep background from working in the sensor tech industry. When I graduated in 2019, therefore, I came off university with a deep interest in this field, and a curiosity to learn more. For that, I searched for a company developing new sensor solutions – not just re-selling products from other manufacturers – and one that’s of a size and team culture where I can make meaningful contributions, not just be a little cogwheel in a huge machinery. Against these criteria, I identified and proactively applied to ASC Sensors. I’ve now been employed since April 2020 and have never regretted it. Almost without exception, every morning I get up looking forward to solving complex problems and working with a great team.
In my experience, there’s a true appreciation of – indeed, an appetite for – diverse perspectives that typically only come from people of different cultures, education, experiences, beliefs etc. While everyone at ASC is extremely skilled, experienced and dedicated, we all respect and seek each other’s views to make the best possible decisions based on collective input. For example, everyone participates in our weekly engineering meetings, where we share new challenges, what customers wish to achieve, and discuss potential solutions. I enjoy these meetings with colleagues of various backgrounds and broad thinking, because they often give me rich, diverse input to take away and consider integrating in my proposed solutions.
When I’m not at work, I’m deeply involved in spending quality time with my family and friends, cherishing every moment we get to share. Beyond family life, I have a keen interest in exploring new technologies and enhancing my technical skills. Additionally, I enjoy jogging, which helps me stay active and clear my mind. Watching movies is another favorite pastime of mine, providing both entertainment and a way to relax after a busy day.
