Modal and structural analyses

From vibration data to digital twins: engineering efficient wind turbines

How does a wind turbine really respond to dynamic loads? Modal and structural analysis makes the invisible visible – and provides engineers with the data to optimize tomorrow’s turbines.

In testing, defined forces are applied to the structure while precision accelerometers capture its response across various frequencies and amplitudes. For these applications, MMF lightweight piezoelectric accelerometers, available through ASC, offer a key advantage: An extremely low mass minimizes their influence on the structure being measured while enabling highly accurate vibration analysis. With the uniaxial KS96B.10, KS96B.100, KS97B.10 and KS97B.100 (weighing approximately 3 grams, depending on the model) the portfolio covers measurement ranges from ±60 g to ±600 g and offers top or side connector options as well as TEDS integration.

The resulting data reveals natural frequencies, mode shapes and structural behavior – valuable inputs for validating simulations and creating accurate digital twins of wind turbines.

Engineers can then assess design variations virtually, optimize components and address critical vibration behavior before making physical changes. The benefits are substantial: greater durability, higher efficiency, reduced vibration and lower noise emissions.

In an industry where every percentage point of performance matters, better data can drive better design.
