Knowing exactly where a train is at any given moment is essential for safe and increasingly automated rail operations. But what happens in tunnels, urban canyons or other environments where satellite-based positioning can be temporarily disrupted?
This is where high-performance inertial sensors come into play.
ASC’s analog inertial measurement units ASC IMU 7-LN, ASC IMU 7-MF and ASC IMU 8 as well as JAE’s digital JCS-7603 combine precision accelerometers and gyroscopes to continuously capture a train’s movement and dynamics. Integrated into navigation systems, these inertial measurement units (IMUs) can help bridge GNSS outages and maintain reliable positioning information when external locating systems are limited or unavailable.
This capability is also highly relevant for Automated Train Operation (ATO). As rail networks move toward higher levels of automation, accurate and continuous localization becomes an important building block for safe, efficient, reliable operation.
From navigation support to automated rail systems, precise inertial data helps keep trains on track – digitally as well as physically.
