RAIL TRANSPORT

Specifying structural requirements for bogie frames (EN 13749)

Putting bogie frames to the test – with confidence

Wheelsets and bogies face demanding dynamic loads throughout a train’s service life. Before new designs can enter operation, rigorous laboratory and track testing is essential to validate bogie frame strength and structural integrity in accordance with EN 13749.

This is where accelerometers of the ASC OS series demonstrate their strengths. Designed for medium-frequency (MF) measurements, these capacitive sensors combine broad measurement and frequency ranges with excellent long-term stability and high shock resistance. Their robust, nonflammable, laser-welded stainless-steel housing is hermetically sealed – making them ideally suited for reliable measurements under the harsh environmental conditions encountered in railway testing.

In real-world train testing, impacts affecting wheels and bogies can reach around 400 g, while ASC OS sensors are designed to withstand shocks of up to 6,000 g. Their high signal amplitudes and wide frequency response enable engineers to capture both low and dynamic accelerations with high accuracy.

For complementary vibration and structural-dynamics measurements, MMF piezoelectric sensors can further extend the measurement setup for demanding test bench applications.
