Smart monitoring of critical railway bridges

Bridge safety: from reactive inspection to predictive monitoring

Railroad bridges face constantly changing loads – from train weight and speed to wind, temperature and other environmental influences. Monitoring their structural behavior accurately is essential. However, conventional measurement methods can be complex, time-consuming and disruptive to operations.

A pilot project by DB InfraGO and ASC Sensors is exploring a smarter approach: continuous monitoring with ASC AiSys ECO smart sensor systems. Installed at defined measuring points, they capture dynamic bridge displacement in real time – without requiring fixed reference points – and process the data directly at the sensor. Integrated algorithms, filtering and drift correction help transform raw acceleration data into insights that guide proactive maintenance and, where necessary, immediate action.

Complementing smart systems, digital sensors like the ASC DiSens ECO accelerometer provide integrated signal processing and standardized interfaces for reliable data transmission and straightforward system integration.

The objective? Identify structural changes earlier, trigger timely alerts and move from reactive inspections toward proactive maintenance – helping bridges remain safe, available and economical for longer.
