From the Nibelungs to the digital twin

Digital twins can expand the life of historic infrastructure

How can we extend the service life of aging infrastructure while keeping it safe and economically viable? Germany’s Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) is investigating exactly that – with the historic Nibelungen Bridge in Worms serving as a real-world demonstration and validation structure.

Smart ASC AiSys ECO accelerometers are helping researchers build the data foundation. Installed directly on the bridge, they capture dynamic vibrations and process measurement data in real time. Integrated filtering, frequency analysis and configurable parameters provide valuable reference data for understanding how the structure responds to loads and changing environmental conditions.

Digital sensor technology such as ASC DiSens ECO complements this approach with integrated signal processing and standardized interfaces, enabling precise measurement data to become part of connected monitoring architectures.

By combining sensor data with structural information, historical knowledge and external influences, researchers can create increasingly sophisticated digital twins – helping predict structural changes and future maintenance requirements.
