STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING

New approaches to railroad bridge monitoring

Smart bridge monitoring keeps railways moving

Railroad bridges face constantly changing loads from train weight and speed to wind, temperature and seismic activity. Understanding how these structures respond is essential to keeping rail networks safe, available and economical.

A pilot project by DB InfraGO and ASC is exploring a smarter approach to bridge monitoring using ASC AiSys ECO smart accelerometer systems. Installed at defined measuring points, they continuously capture dynamic bridge displacement – without requiring fixed reference points. High-frequency sampling, filtering, drift correction and integrated processing transform acceleration measurements into actionable data in real time.

The goal: Move from periodic, reactive inspections toward continuous monitoring and proactive maintenance, enabling engineers to identify critical changes earlier and intervene before damage disrupts operations.

Digital accelerometers such as the ASC DiSens ECO complement this approach, combining precise measurement with integrated signal processing and digital interfaces for easy integration into connected monitoring architectures.

From bridge vibration to real-time insight: Smart sensor systems help keep critical rail infrastructure on track.
