RENEWABLE ENERGIES

Aerodynamic and mass-related imbalances in rotors

Gone with the wind: when imbalance costs energy, precision monitoring pays off

Even small rotor imbalances can have a big impact on wind turbine performance. Deviations in blade pitch, blade deformation, erosion, damage or uneven ice formation can create aerodynamic or mass-related imbalances – resulting in unwanted forces, vibrations, increased noise and component wear.

Detecting these effects is challenging: Wind turbine rotors operate at very low rotational frequencies, often below 0.5 Hz. Structural Health Monitoring, therefore, requires sensors capable of capturing extremely small accelerations with exceptional resolution.

The triaxial ASC 5511LN and ASC 5515LN accelerometers are built for precisely this challenge. Their capacitive MEMS technology, excellent signal-to-noise ratio and amplitude resolution of <20 µg enable reliable detection of aerodynamic and mass-related imbalances. While the ASC 5511LN features a lightweight aluminum housing, the ASC 5515LN offers a robust stainless-steel alternative.

The payoff? Earlier fault detection, reduced component stress, optimized turbine performance and greater operational reliability.

Because every unnecessary vibration can mean energy – and revenue – lost.

Explore how ASC inertial sensors can help unlock your wind turbine efficiency.
