RAIL TRANSPORT

Characterization of track geometry (EN 13848)

Turning in-service trains into powerful track monitoring platforms

Reliable track geometry is fundamental to safe, comfortable and efficient rail operations. In accordance with EN 13848, continuous monitoring can help identify deviations in track geometry at an early stage – reducing the need for dedicated measurement trains, track closures and service disruptions.

ASC Sensors’ high-precision accelerometers and gyroscopes can be integrated into tailor-made measurement systems installed directly on regular in-service trains. They provide accurate real-time data that enables the calculation and assessment of parameters such as longitudinal height, dynamic direction and track distortion.

Depending on measurement tasks and system requirements, solutions may incorporate inertial sensors of these models:

– ASC OS-115LN-PG: MEMS-based capacitive accelerometers to calculate the deviations in the longitudinal height and in the direction of the tracks
– ASC 271: MEMS vibrating ring gyroscopes to calculate the cross level of the tracks
– ASC P311K: IEPE accelerometers for characterizing high frequencies and amplitudes during the measurements
– The ASC RAIL series: dedicated accelerometers and gyroscopes approved according to EN50155 and other relevant railway standards, ready-for-use in demanding railway applications

The outcome? Continuous infrastructure monitoring, real-time condition tracking during everyday rail operations and a solid basis for predictive maintenance and efficient asset management. Reducing the need for service disruptions and enhancing the capacity and safety of rail networks around the globe.
