Precision sensor technology for microgravity research

At the limits of gravity: measuring the almost immeasurable

At the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) at the University of Bremen, ASC inertial sensors help verify the exceptional microgravity conditions created in the Bremen Drop Tower and GraviTower. Researchers there conduct experiments under conditions reaching approximately one millionth of Earth’s gravity (10⁻⁶ g).

Capturing such tiny forces demands exceptional precision. Accelerometers from the ASC EQ series provide ultra-low-noise measurements with resolutions below 1 µg, enabling researchers to quantify minimal residual accelerations. Meanwhile, the triaxial ASC 283 tactical-grade gyroscope detects extremely small rotational movements during free fall, with bias stability below 0.1°/h and angular random walk below 0.01°/√h.

Also: Precision must come with robustness, as sensors embedded in the experiment capsules have to withstand acceleration and braking forces of up to 50 g.

From microgravity to simulated Moon and Mars conditions, ASC sensor technology helps turn minute movements into reliable scientific data.
