At the edge of stability: measuring aeroelastic flutter

Vibrations are part of every flight. But when structural and aerodynamic forces interact unfavorably, normal modes can overlap – potentially triggering aeroelastic flutter. In extreme cases, rapidly increasing oscillations can threaten the integrity of aircraft components.

That is why flutter testing is critical to aircraft development and validation. By measuring how wings and other structures respond under realistic, demanding loads, engineers can identify critical vibration behavior and verify stability across the required flight envelope.

In these testing series, every gram and every data point count.

ASC’s compact capacitive accelerometers are ideally suited for challenging measurement locations. The uniaxial ASC 4111LN, ASC 4211LN and ASC 4221MF, combine precise acceleration sensing with an exceptionally compact, lightweight design of less than 3 grams. This enables sensors to be installed close to critical structures while minimizing their influence on the component’s dynamic behavior.
